Training Courses

Flatwater Safe Participant
(formerly Flatwater Level 1)

The canoe and kayak flatwater courses are designed to teach you the basic skills so you can control your canoe and self-rescue on flatwater. The first day is spent learning the strokes and canoe control, which is done through instruction and games. On the second day, the morning is spent revising and refreshing your skills before you set off on a trip down the river – flatwater only.

You must be able to swim 50m with clothes on while wearing a PFD. The course is open to Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and Leaders. Once enrolled you will be sent a course letter from the Canoe Team with clothing and equipment requirements.

Please note if you cannot swim you are not permitted to participate.

We recommend that members are mature enough physically (ideally 1.6m and 50kg) and emotionally (ideally year 7) to cope with a demanding course over 2 full days.

Successful completion of the course will earn members the Anchor Badge.

For youth members a L1 course is set primarily at the OAS Stage 4 level and allow you to participate in organised trips

For adults you'll be able to assess up to OAS Stage 3 and participate in organised trips

Please note the location of all courses and trips may change due to water level, water quality and location of Groups booking course.
